Ravana Falls

Ravana Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Sri Lanka, located in the picturesque town of Ella in the Badulla District. Named after the legendary King Ravana from the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, this waterfall is a popular tourist attraction known for its scenic beauty and historical significance.

The waterfall cascades down from a height of about 25 meters (82 feet) and consists of several tiers, creating a stunning visual display as the water flows over the rocky outcrops. During the rainy season, the waterfall is particularly impressive, with a powerful flow of water creating a thunderous sound and a misty spray. In contrast, during the dry season, the flow may reduce, but the surrounding lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere still make it a worthwhile visit.

According to local legend, Ravana Falls is associated with the story of King Ravana, who is believed to have kidnapped Princess Sita and hidden her in a cave behind the waterfall. This cave, known as Ravana Cave, can be explored by visitors and adds an element of mystery and adventure to the site. The cave is located about 1,370 meters (4,495 feet) above sea level and requires a short but steep hike to reach.

The area around Ravana Falls is rich in biodiversity, with a variety of flora and fauna adding to its natural charm. The waterfall is easily accessible from the main road, and there are several vantage points along the way where visitors can stop to admire the view and take photographs. The pool at the base of the waterfall is a popular spot for locals and tourists to cool off and enjoy a refreshing dip in the clear, cool waters.

For those visiting Ella, Ravana Falls is a must-see destination. It is conveniently located near other popular attractions, such as the Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak, making it easy to include in a day trip or tour of the area. The combination of natural beauty, historical lore, and easy accessibility makes Ravana Falls a highlight of any visit to Sri Lanka’s hill country.
