Devon Falls

Devon Falls, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in Sri Lanka, is located in the Nuwara Eliya District, near the town of Talawakele. Named after an English coffee planter named Devon, the waterfall cascades down a height of 97 meters (318 feet) in three distinct tiers, creating a spectacular sight against the lush green backdrop of tea plantations. The falls are fed by the Kotmale Oya, a tributary of the Mahaweli River, and are a prominent feature in the rugged terrain of Sri Lanka’s hill country.

The view of Devon Falls is easily accessible from the A7 highway, which connects Nuwara Eliya to Colombo. A specially constructed viewpoint provides tourists with a breathtaking panorama of the falls and the surrounding landscape. The falls are especially impressive during the rainy season when the water flow is at its peak, creating a thunderous roar and a mist that envelops the area, adding to the mystical ambiance.

Visitors to Devon Falls can enjoy the scenic drive through the winding roads of the tea country, where they can stop at various points to take in the serene beauty of the rolling hills and neatly manicured tea estates. The nearby St. Clair’s Falls, also known as the “Little Niagara of Sri Lanka,” complements the visit, offering another majestic view just a short distance away.

The area around Devon Falls is rich in biodiversity, with a variety of flora and fauna endemic to the region. The cool, temperate climate of the highlands makes it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers. Additionally, the local tea factories, such as the famous Devon Tea Estate, offer tours where visitors can learn about the tea production process and sample some of the finest Ceylon tea.

Devon Falls is not only a natural wonder but also a symbol of the tranquil and unspoiled beauty of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. It provides a refreshing escape for those looking to immerse themselves in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Whether you are a tourist or a local, the majestic sight of Devon Falls is sure to leave a lasting impression.
